Kinja'd!!!

I took off the last sheet of aluminum to find this. A mostly-finished bamboo weave. No pedestrian pallets for us, no sir.

I never thought pallets could be so elegant.

Pallet-lopnik.

Damn! Ikea could sell these as room separators or something. Maybe I’ll buy a stack and hock them off as “yoga platforms”.

Please tell me you’re making a coffee table and/or counter tops right now.

Maybe to keep moisture and water from coming in through the bottom?

Awesome pallet, and a flat surface too.

Pallets with metal on them here just show up with low-density fiberboard. Feh.

That is a pretty sweet pallet! Gotta make that into something.

If I can find a way to get it home before someone else steals it, I’m planning to make a coffee table and matching end tables.

Most of ours don’t even have a board, to be honest. This one was from a different supplier than usual because our usual supplier had none.

Perhaps. It’s not from our usual supplier, my boss has been here for a decade and never seen this before.

Where are you finding these pimp’n pallets? I’ve never seen them before

I couldn’t tell you. This is from a supplier we don’t typically use, and itself may even be an oddity among their pallets.

Haha, cool! Maybe it’d just the beginning of the bamboo pallet revolution

Sheet aluminum you say? Do tell. It seems like it could be fun stuff to play with.

Also, nice pallet. I've never seen anything quite like that. Most around here are the cheapest crappiest pine, or are something more solid, but painted blue and are part of a pallet service (aka no taking them).

We build ATM surrounds, not terribly interesting.

It’s the first pallet of its kind I’ve seen, same as my coworkers. Most of ours don’t even have a surface, just the cross beams that aren’t even close to square.

Still not bad. I bet you guys have a decent sized shear and brake?

We have a big brake (about ten feet long) and a smaller one. Most of the cutting happens on one of 3 CNC routers, but we do also have a ginormous beam saw.

That’s pretty cool. I don’t have much experience with CNC machines, but when cutting something like sheet metal, do you have to cut pretty far into some sort of sacrificial board underneath the metal in order for things to cut properly?

That depends on your definition of “pretty far”. There is a sheet of particle board underneath that gets replaced every month or so, and we cut into it as much as 3 thousandths of an inch. You don’t typically need to cut too deep for the metal, but other materials we cut will have a paper coating to protect the uncut surface. Those generally get cut a little deeper to cut through the bottom paper rather than just pushing it down.

I guess from my woodworking skills, 3 thousands of an inch isn’t far at all. :P In order to get the sheets to stay put, do you have to clamp them down much, or does the CNC not exert a lot of lateral force on the pieces being cut?

There’s actually a vacuum that holds it on the table. The board is porous enough that the suction can grab things through it. Kind of like an air hockey table in reverse. Then we tape the edges to the table to create a better seal.
